Careers for young people with special education needs and disabilities
The achievements of young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities were celebrated during a ceremony on Wednesday 12 February.
The celebration event was held at The Westminster School in Rowley Regis. Young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities were recognised for their achievements in the workplace.
Together with local employers and schools, young people are completing a mixture of work placements, internships and apprenticeships with support from Sandwell Council.
Local employers including Sandwell Council, delivery company DPD, Blakemore Foodservice, grounds maintenance company Ground Control and Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust have all offered placements for young people and gave certificates to recognise their achievements.
A group of young people also took part in a residential course at Sandwell Council’s Frank Chapman Centre in Bewdley. The course helped young people with team building skills as well as boosting their confidence to get them ready for looking for a job or work placement.
Councillor Danny Millard, cabinet member for skills and employment attended the event. He said: “Young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities can often find it difficult to find employment once they leave school.
“Working in partnership, the schools, local employers and the council have done a fabulous job in supporting these young people into work with the ambition of preparing them for adulthood and the world of employment from the earliest stage.
“I want everyone to continue to work together with our young people so they can help them achieve their career hopes and aspirations to fulfil their true potential.
